***As Architecture for Public Benefit***

The Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence (ATASK) currently owns a property in Boston which is being as temporary and short-term housing for survivors of domestic violence and their families. The property houses up to twelve families at a time. ATASK received a grant for a small facilities upgrade, and were interested in upgrading and renovating their kitchen. Because the kitchen is shared among the twelve families, with each family often bringing their own dishware and small appliances, as well as dry food and perishables, consolidation and redistribution of storage was a priority for the design strategy. In addition to the individual family needs, ATASK also required storage for their organization’s own needs, such as common appliances, spices, and event supplies.

The proposed design is conceived as an integrated two-phase strategy with the first phase taking into account possible future developments of the second phase. The current phase involves the most immediate needs and is limited to the existing kitchen boundary. It includes relocating the refrigerators, upgrading thestorage spaces, replacing the countertop, cabinetry, floors and installing a commercial grade sink, as well as patching and painting walls throughout and installing new lighting above the dining area.
